Essential Oil Showcase - "Thieves"

Disclaimer: Always follow your medical doctor’s advice and recommendations. Essential Oils are not a substitute for medications.

So, I caught a nasty cold this weekend, just in time for the New Year! That’s okay, though, because it gives me a chance to discuss one of my favorite blends of Essential Oils. The base of this blend is Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary, and there are several variations to this blend on the market, including different ingredients, but those five oils always seem to be present. Young Living sells it as “Thieves”, dōTerra calls it “On Guard”, Healing Solutions calls it “Health Shield”, Nature’s Truth calls it “4 Thiefs”, Rocky Mountain calls it “Immune Strength,” etc. You get the idea. I use the YL brand of it, and it has a nice, spicy/woodsy note to it. But it’s the story behind this oil blend that makes it a fun oil to diffuse in my home.

The story goes like this: During the Black Plague of the 15th Century, four thieves were stripping the bodies of the victims of the plague of their valuables. They themselves did not contract the plague, even though it was highly contagious. When they were caught, and brought before the King, he demanded to know how they had avoided infection. The thieves were all members of the same family who were by trade apothecaries. They had been taught that certain plants had medicinal properties and that they had used this method to avoid contracting the plague. The thieves supposedly used Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary.

YL has an entire line of household products with the Thieves oil as its base, from oral hygiene and personal care to household cleaners.

So how did I catch a cold? Well, the prime reason was, I wasn’t diffusing it daily like I should have been! Lesson learned the hard way! I have some in my diffuser next to my bed right now.

Have a Happy and Safe New Year!

Slique Essence by Young Living

I am trying a new essential oil blend today, called Slique Essense by Young Living. From their website: "Slique Essence combines grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, spearmint, and ocotea with stevia extract in a unique blend that supports healthy weight management goals. These ingredients work together to help control hunger*, especially when used in conjunction with Slique Tea or the Slique Kit. The pleasant citrus combination of grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon essential oils adds a flavorful and uplifting element to any day with the added support of spearmint that may help with digestion.* Ocotea essential oil adds an irresistible, cinnamon-like aroma to help control hunger, while stevia adds an all-natural sweetener that provides a pleasant taste with no added calories." I have 2 drops in my iced tea, and it tastes pretty good, light and citrus-y. Ingredients are as follows: Grapefruit EO (Citrus paradisi), Tangerine EO (Citrus reticulata), Spearmint EO (Mentha spicata), Lemon EO (Citrus limon), Ocotea (Ocotea quixos), Stevia (Rebaudioside A). Let me know if you'd like to try it too!

Tarot Card of the Day - December 30, 2016

Today I am using the Angel Tarot Deck by Doreen Virtue & Radleigh Valentine. This deck is also very positive and provides loving messages. Again, this deck is available on www.amazon.com, for about $14 USD.

Today's card is the Ten of Fire. This card tells you that as you are setting your goals for the new year, that you should remember to ask for help when you need it. You are too busy and taking too much upon yourself. Asking for help is okay to do, it does not mean that you are not strong enough; it simply means that many hands lighten the load. Be good to yourself.

Lavender Essential Oil

One of the most versatile Essential Oils is Lavender (Lavendula Angustifolia). Lavender is antiseptic, antifungal, vasodilating, relaxing, antidepressant, and emotionally balancing. It's properties make it valuable in treating minor skin irritants, cuts, bruises, insect bites, irritability, and insomnia. Lavender has been documented to improve concentration and mental clarity. Lavender is one of the few EOs that can be applied directly to the skin (without a carrier oil). It is a light oil that blends well with florals, citrus, and/or wood oils.

Lavender can be used directly on the skin, inhaled, or in a diffuser.

What ways do you use Lavender? Comment below!

Tarot Card of the Day - December 29, 2016

Today I am using the Archangel Power Tarot Card Deck by Doreen Virtue and Radleigh Valentine. I love this deck for its positive messages and motivations. (If you are interested in ordering these beautiful cards, you may do so through www.amazon.com, they are available new for approximately $14 USD).

Today’s card is the Eight of Raphael. What a wonderful card to draw with the New Year coming in a few days! Now is the time to clear out old energies and make way for the new. This card tells you that something better is waiting for you and that what may have once interested you has lost its charm. It’s time to move on, and what better time to do that than the start of a new year? Look into your heart and set your goals and desires to paper. Follow your true path, by following you heart and taking care of yourself. Fill any voids in your life in healthy ways, and watch your spirit soar. If you are dealing with feelings of burn out, now is the time to take care of you – a few days off resetting your priorities is just what you need!

Archangel Raphael has such a peaceful energy to work with. He is the Angel of Healing. Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Call upon Archangel Raphael to assist you with healing your spirit and helping you to clear out energies that no longer benefit you.

Disclaimer: I am not recommending that Essential Oils should replace any medical advice from your doctor, and you should follow all instructions for your prescribed medications. I am using EOs to help manage my pain, not as a substitute for my doctor’s recommendations.
I started my journey with Essential Oils (or, EOs) about 15 years ago. I dabbled, wanting to learn more, because I was looking for holistic ways to combat migraine headaches. I had my first migraine headache when I was 15 years old. I had the horrid head pain, where it intensified every time I took a breath or made a small movement. I had the nausea, where I literally threw up right in front of my mother while she was trying to take a bath. I had the light sensitivity, and all I wanted to do was curl up in my bed and make it STOP. I have suffered from migraines ever since. I often wonder what the trigger was back then, at age 15 – hormones, dietary, or genetics? I made my first visit to a neurologist when I was in my early 20’s. I had tried the Triptans, and they did not seem to be working. The neuro my PCP sent me to was a very unsympathetic man. He said, “How did you get in here? I normally treat people who have had migraines for weeks at a time, not a few days at a time!” I dropped him and found my savior, Dr. Emil Matarese, soon after that, at the recommendation of a friend. At this time, I had been suffering one to two migraines per month, which lasted two to three days per month, and which rendered me pretty much incapacitated. I was missing work and practically had stock in Excedrin and Tylenol. Dr. Matarese ruled out any medical factors (i.e., a tumor) and started me on a daily regimen of a muscle relaxant and a pain killer. I slowly began to have fewer and fewer episodes of incapacitating migraine, and started having more of what I call “functional” migraine – meaning, I could still do my work, and basically function, but still suffered. The daily regimen worked wonders for me, but I hated taking those medicines every day, especially after I had my two children. Those medications made me tired, so I took them at night before bed, but I worried that if the children needed me, that I would not be able to wake up (or, if I did, that I would be groggy). Enter in the EOs. I started reading about them and decided to give them a try. Just in the last year or so have I been incorporating them into my daily lifestyle. Not only do I use them and blends, but I learned how versatile they were – from dietary needs, to household cleaning, to aromatherapy, and even for our pets. I am not going to preach any one company to purchase from, but I will share the basics about oils, ways to use them, and even share some “aromatherapy recipes” with you. I have made household cleansers, beauty aids, my own diffuser blends, and have introduced them to my friends, family and co-workers.
One of the blends I have made myself for my migraines is a blend of Lavender, German Chamomile, Peppermint, and Rosemary. I blended this in with Apricot Oil as a carrier into a roll on container. I use it on my temples and the back of my neck when a headache starts creeping in on me. I also put a few drops on a lava-bead bracelet to “carry” it around with me during the day, or in an essential oil diffuser locket (both of these items can be purchased on www.amazon.com). I made a blend for my sister, who doesn’t care for Lavender (who also suffers from migraine), that I have been calling “Wendy’s Blend”. These blends have helped me manage my headaches and/or migraines without having to turn to the prescribed medication as often.

I am hoping you will check back often!
